Demon Slayer Chapter 136: Demon Slayer Chapter 136: Moving - Hashira Sparring, Tanjiro's Ohagi Diplomacy, and Muzan's Infiltration
Demon Slayer Chapter 136, titled "Moving," deepens the Hashira Training Arc with intense sparring sessions, Tanjiro Kamado's unique approach to fostering camaraderie, and a chilling revelation of Muzan Kibutsuji's infiltration into the Ubuyashiki Estate. The chapter opens with Genya Shinazugawa, Tanjiro, and Inosuke Hashibira eating, where Genya remarks that, despite everything, Gyomei Himejima is a good person. He explains that Gyomei didn't make him his Tsuguko due to his lack of talent in breathing techniques, but rather because he ate demons, making him an apprentice—a unique path to strength. Genya comments that Shinobu Kocho, who was understandably displeased by his demon-eating and lectured him every time they met, would have similarly lectured Tanjiro for his stubborn demeanor, though she doesn't show it. Tanjiro reassures him that Shinobu is simply worried about his health, before telling Genya he will now train with Giyu Tomioka, asking if Genya would like to accompany him. Genya declines, stating he still hasn't moved his boulder one cho, leading Inosuke to playfully taunt him about his lack of breathing, sparking a brief, comical scuffle between the two. Before leaving, Tanjiro considers telling Genya something important about Sanemi Shinazugawa, his estranged brother, hinting at his desire to mend their fractured relationship.
On his way to Giyu's place, Tanjiro notices Zenitsu Agatsuma atop his boulder and asks if he had moved it, to which Zenitsu calmly replies he has not. Tanjiro explains he's moving to his next training stage, but expresses concern for Zenitsu, noticing his unusual silence. Zenitsu bids him good luck, stating he has simply achieved clarity. Worried, Tanjiro asks if he can do anything to help, but Zenitsu tells him he must face this challenge alone, easing Tanjiro's concern and thanking him for his kindness, but emphasizing the personal nature of his struggle. Making his way through a tranquil bamboo forest, Tanjiro ponders on Zenitsu and Nezuko Kamado, whom he had left alone at the start of Hashira Training, believing she is lonely and misses him. He soon arrives at a building indicating Giyu's nearby residence. Outside in the yard, Sanemi and Giyu engage in a fierce sparring match; Sanemi unleashes Wind Breathing, First Form: Whirlwind Dust Cutter, and attacks Giyu, who blocks the blow but sustains a crack in his wooden sword. Tanjiro is stunned by the Wind Hashira's incredible speed, but realizes he is able to clearly perceive their movements, a sign of his own progress and enhanced senses.
As they trade blows, Sanemi taunts Giyu for his statement that he is "different" from them, dismaying Tanjiro, who understands the profound reason behind Giyu's self-isolation and guilt. The Water Hashira uses Water Breathing, Fourth Form: Striking Tide, narrowly missing Sanemi's leg. Sanemi retaliates with Fifth Form: Cold Mountain Wind, and Giyu defends himself with Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust, causing their wooden blades to shatter in the intense exchange. Without weapons, Sanemi proposes fighting bare-handed, but Tanjiro bravely runs in and stands between them, attempting to de-escalate the situation. Still angry at Tanjiro, Sanemi reminds him to keep his distance, accusing him of following him. Tanjiro, with an innocent yet strategic suggestion, asks if they are fighting over ohagi, claiming he can offer them some. Sanemi angrily questions if he is joking, but Tanjiro earnestly replies, knowing Sanemi's fondness for ohagi. Giyu is surprised by this revelation, as Tanjiro explains he caught the scent of ohagi fillings at Sanemi's place, and whenever Sanemi returned, he smelled green tea and ohagi. As Giyu asks if Sanemi indeed likes ohagi, Tanjiro then asks if he enjoys it coarse or fine, claiming he loves his grandmother's batch, only for the annoyed Wind Hashira to punch Tanjiro in the face, adding a comical interlude to the tense scene.
Tanjiro awakens to see Giyu beside him, asking for Sanemi's whereabouts. The Water Hashira calmly answers that Sanemi had angrily stormed off. When Tanjiro asks why they were fighting, Giyu notes they were just sparring, as are the other Hashira, hence their use of wooden swords. Tanjiro apologizes for interrupting their training, but Giyu doesn't mind, as Sanemi was angry at him the entire time, and Giyu couldn't express himself anyway. Now knowing Sanemi's favorite food, Giyu reasons he can keep ohagi in his pocket and befriend him, a pleasant idea Tanjiro entertains, perhaps hoping they can all get along. Walking alone, Sanemi questions Tanjiro's "antics," believing he is acting foolishly. He suddenly hears something rustling in the nearby bushes and lunges forward to grab it. In his hand is a demon's crushed eye, bearing a kanji on it, which deeply confuses him. Outside the Ubuyashiki Estate, Muzan Kibutsuji appears before a weakened Kagaya Ubuyashiki, marking the chilling culmination of Muzan's meticulous infiltration plans and the terrifying commencement of the final battle against the Demon Slayer Corps. This dramatic conclusion to Demon Slayer Chapter 136 sets the stage for the climactic final confrontation, highlighting the intricate web of personal struggles, strategic preparations, and the imminent threat of Muzan, leaving readers in suspense for the next chapter of the thrilling Demon Slayer manga.
