Demon Slayer Chapter 143: Demon Slayer Chapter 143: Wrath - Shinobu's Vengeance, Doma's Mockery, and the Seeds of Hope
Demon Slayer Chapter 143, titled "Wrath," delves into Shinobu Kocho's heartbreaking past and her unyielding resolve for vengeance, even as she faces her ultimate demise at the hands of Upper Rank Two Doma. The chapter opens with Shinobu recalling her childhood, a time when she believed happiness was an endless journey. This naive belief was shattered when a demon brutally murdered both her parents, leaving her and her older sister, Kanae Kocho, orphaned. They were miraculously saved by Gyomei Himejima, who arrived and swiftly eliminated the demon. In the wake of this tragedy, Shinobu realized that while her own happiness was irrevocably lost, she could still fight to protect the happiness of others. This profound realization solidified her and Kanae's vow to become Demon Slayers, driven by a shared commitment to prevent others from enduring the same suffering, cementing their dedication to justice in the thrilling narrative of the Demon Slayer manga.
Shinobu and Kanae made a solemn promise to dedicate their lives to slaying demons. They believed that despite their individual weaknesses, defeating even one demon could save dozens of lives, and eliminating an Upper Rank demon could save hundreds. For them, it wasn't a question of whether they could succeed, but a fundamental necessity—a moral imperative to act in the face of such profound evil. Shinobu then vividly recalls a moment when Tanjiro Kamado had asked if she was angry. She internally confirms that her anger has festered for a long time, fueled by the deaths of her parents, her beloved sister, and all her previous Tsugukos before Kanao Tsuyuri. She also remembers the families of Aoi Kanzaki, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi, and Naho Takada, all tragically lost to demons. Above all, her fury is ignited by the frustrating inadequacy of her wisteria poison to inflict lasting damage on Doma. Her sword, now imbued with a massive dose of poison, slips from Doma's neck as she collapses, but Doma, with a chillingly casual cruelty, catches her with his ice powers and pulls her into a perverse embrace, further mocking her desperate struggle.
Doma, holding Shinobu in his arms, commendably praises her admirable efforts, expressing a twisted admiration that such a "weak girl" could achieve so much. He patronizingly remarks that while she lacks Kanae's raw talent, she has performed remarkably well as a Demon Slayer, calling it miraculous that she hasn't died sooner. He declares her attempts to kill him futile, labeling her fruitless endeavor as the "folly and wonder of humanity." With a chilling grin, Doma proclaims her worthy to be consumed, offering her a perverse eternity together. When asked for her last words, Shinobu, with unyielding bitterness, defiantly curses him: "Go to Hell!" As she utters these words, Kanao opens the door to the cult room and witnesses Doma brutally crushing Shinobu in his arms, causing the Insect Hashira's sword to fall to the ground. In a desperate act, Kanao leaps upwards, attempting Flower Breathing, Fourth Form: Crimson Hanagoromo, but Doma swiftly evades her, landing on the floor and warning her not to attack him while he is absorbing someone. Kanao, seething with a silent rage, stares at her sister's murderer, internalizing her grief and newfound resolve. Doma, still attempting to taunt her, wonders if Shinobu's hand signals were meant to convey his powers, impressed by her ability to communicate such vital information in her final moments. As he pats Shinobu's disappearing head, Doma casually notes that despite her best efforts, her struggle was ultimately futile, remarking that his night is proving quite enjoyable with "such fine feasts" continually presenting themselves. Kanao, staring at Upper Rank Two, internalizes a fragile hope that the people she cares about will somehow be alive tomorrow, but she recognizes the fleeting and uncertain nature of such a promise. She questions why people cling to such beliefs, hinting at a deeper philosophical struggle. Meanwhile, Zenitsu Agatsuma approaches a room and calls out to the individual inside, who curtly responds that Zenitsu's address is improper for a senior. Kaigaku then emerges, taunting Zenitsu for his shabby appearance. Zenitsu, however, responds with newfound resolve, declaring that he no longer recognizes Kaigaku as his senior now that he has become a demon, setting the stage for their own fated confrontation in the climactic Infinity Castle Arc of the Demon Slayer manga.
