Demon Slayer Chapter 4: Tanjiro's Training - The Boulder Challenge and Fox-Masked Teacher
Demon Slayer chapter 4 provides an in-depth portrayal of Tanjiro's rigorous training under Sakonji Urokodaki's guidance, while detailing the organizational structure of the Demon Slayer Corps and the fundamental characteristics of demons in the Demon Slayer manga. Urokodaki explains to Tanjiro that although the Demon Slayer Corps has several hundred members, it is not officially recognized by the government, yet has secretly protected humanity from demonic threats since ancient times. The organization's leader remains mysterious, with few knowing their true identity, adding to the legendary mystique of the Demon Slayer Corps.
The knowledge about demons reveals the terrifying nature of these monsters in the Demon Slayer series: demons must consume human flesh to survive, possessing incredible regenerative abilities that allow rapid healing from injuries. Even more frightening, some demons can change form or use special Blood Demon Arts. However, demons also have fatal weaknesses—sunlight exposure and decapitation by specially crafted Nichirin swords are the only methods to completely eliminate them. This information provides crucial strategic guidance for Tanjiro's future battles in the Demon Slayer manga.
After six months of mountain training, Tanjiro's physical abilities and olfactory senses show significant improvement. He can more acutely detect trap locations, and his body becomes stronger and more agile. However, the training's danger level gradually increases, leading Tanjiro to suspect whether Urokodaki truly wants to kill him. This suspicion reflects the harsh degree of training and shows Tanjiro's inner struggle and growth in this Demon Slayer chapter.
Nezuko remains in deep sleep during this period, causing Tanjiro both worry and confusion. After examination by a doctor Urokodaki summoned, Nezuko's body shows no abnormalities, but her continued slumber makes Tanjiro increasingly anxious. To become stronger and protect his sister, Tanjiro decides to invest even more effort into training. After a year, Urokodaki tells Tanjiro he has nothing more to teach and presents the final challenge: splitting a massive boulder with his sword. This seemingly impossible task fills Tanjiro with despair, especially after Urokodaki stops providing guidance. Just as Tanjiro reaches his breaking point, a mysterious boy wearing a fox mask appears—having no scent or presence, yet pointing out Tanjiro's numerous weaknesses and deeming him unsuitable for becoming a Demon Slayer. This encounter adds new challenges and opportunities to Tanjiro's breakthrough journey in the Demon Slayer series.
