Demon Slayer Chapter 163: Demon Slayer Chapter 163: Overflowing Heart - Doma's Final Moments, Shinobu and Kanae's Reunion, and Kanao's Tears of Release
Demon Slayer Chapter 163, titled "Overflowing Heart," brings Doma's reign of terror to an end, as his final moments are marked by confusion and a glimpse of emotion, while Shinobu Kocho reunites with her sister Kanae in the afterlife, and Kanao Tsuyuri finally releases a lifetime of suppressed tears. Doma, utterly disbelieving his decapitation, expresses self-pity for losing to a weaker opponent, despite his efforts for others. He initially believes he can regenerate, like Muzan and Akaza, but as his head falls and bounces, his body disintegrates, and he realizes he is dying. He reflects on his lifelong apathy, recalling his mother's murder of his father and her subsequent suicide, which only left him bothered by the smell of blood. Doma, transformed into a demon at 20 and living for over a century, realizes human emotions remained alien to him, highlighting the profound emptiness of his existence in the thrilling narrative of the Demon Slayer manga.
In purgatory, Shinobu, holding Doma's head, expresses relief at his death, smiling as she states she can finally rest. Doma, greeting her, mistakenly calls her Kanae, then asks Shinobu if he truly has to remember their names, finding it creepy. Shinobu, amused, compliments the potency of her wisteria poison, which he only noticed when it fully circulated. She reveals Tamayo's assistance in its creation, expressing a slight frustration that she couldn't kill him with her own poison. Shinobu then expresses faith that her peers will defeat Muzan. Suddenly, Doma claims his missing heart feels like it's beating, asking Shinobu if this is love, surprised that emotions exist. He then wonders if heaven and hell are real, asking Shinobu to join him in hell, to which she curtly tells him to go there already, a final, fitting rebuke to his callousness. Meanwhile, Inosuke Hashibira furiously stomps on Doma's ashes, yelling insults until he collapses, dizzy. He recalls a conversation with Tanjiro Kamado and Zenitsu Agatsuma, where he denied having a mother, claiming he was abandoned. Tanjiro gently reminded him of his mother's love, causing Inosuke to finally break down in tears, remembering his mother's affection and love.
Kanao, now blind in one eye, searches for Shinobu's hairpin, her own hairpin (formerly Kanae's) now broken, filling her with sadness. She apologizes to her older sister, remembering her inability to cry at Kanae's death, a fact that had deeply bothered her. Kanao realizes she had been making excuses, conditioned by an abusive childhood to suppress her emotions. Finding Shinobu's butterfly hairpin, she clutches it to her chest, feeling the ethereal presence of Shinobu and Kanae softly patting her head, telling her she did well. Kanao looks up, only to find them gone. In the afterlife, Shinobu reunites with Kanae and their parents, finding peace. In the cult room pond, holding both her adoptive sisters' hairpins, Kanao finally allows herself to cry, releasing years of suppressed grief and mourning her sisters, a powerful moment of emotional liberation and healing, signifying the enduring bonds of family and the triumph of human emotion over suffering in the climactic Infinity Castle Arc of the Demon Slayer manga.
